AC Gas Filling in Chennai: Real Costs, Scams to Avoid, and When You Actually Need It

Refrigerant is not petrol. It circulates in a sealed copper loop, moving heat from your room to the outdoor unit, and it never gets consumed in the process. A split AC that leaves the factory with 700 grams of R32 should still hold 700 grams ten years later. So when cooling drops, “low gas” is a symptom, not a routine event. Something has let that gas escape.

That matters because refill frequency is the single biggest tell in this trade. A healthy AC needs gas exactly zero times in its life. If a technician tops you up every summer, he is not maintaining your AC — he is billing you annually for the same unfixed leak. The honest sequence is always the same: find the leak, fix it, then recharge once.

Three refrigerants dominate Chennai homes. R22 runs older ACs, roughly pre-2016; it is being phased out in India, so stocks are shrinking and prices climb every year. R410A appeared in the transition years and still powers many fixed-speed and early inverter units. R32 is the current standard — nearly every new inverter split from Daikin, LG, Voltas or Blue Star ships with it.

Why it matters: refrigerants are not interchangeable. Each runs at different pressures with different compressor oils, so you cannot pour R32 into an R22 machine. Your gas type also sets your bill, because R22 is scarce and R410A needs more careful handling after a leak. Real low-gas symptoms are specific. Ice forming on the copper pipes or the indoor coil while the room stays warm. A soft hissing near the outdoor unit.
